FEBRUARY 1987

Cover Story: A solid week of negotiations between high-ranking officials with both organizations paid off in a big way, as the Universal Wrestling Federation, then one of the top promotions in the U.S., and PWI announced plans to hold the $50,000 PWI/UWF Challenge Cup, a single-elimination tournament to run over a period of seven weeks. The cover photo saw seven of the UWF’s finest posing with their mitts on the trophy they all coveted. The accompanying feature—“PWI’s $50,000 Challenge Tournament: Who Is The Best In The UWF?”—laid out the logistics of the tourney and looked at the participants. Terry Gordy, Hacksaw Duggan, and Chris Adams were among the favorites. A young Sting was a longshot. Steve Williams ultimately prevailed.

Eye-Catcher: Forget the Cup and the $50 G’s, this was most of these guys’ only chance to get on the cover and they were going to make the most of it!
